Synopsis doc: Manaus mural project
(fr) Ce projet vise à créer un processus artistique collaboratif en Amazonie brésilienne, où un groupe diversifié d’artistes, d’activistes et de locaux travailleront ensemble pour produire une série de cinq peintures murales dans une communauté de Manaus. Lancé au cours d’une longue traversée en ferry au cœur de l’Amazonie, le projet vise non seulement à embellir les espaces, mais aussi à responsabiliser les communautés locales en leur permettant de raconter leur propre histoire par le biais de la peinture. Les peintures murales seront réalisées dans le cadre d’ateliers avec les habitants, mêlant pratiques artistiques et récits locaux.
(en) This project seeks to create a collaborative artistic process in the Brazilian Amazon, where a diverse group of artists, activists, and locals will work together to produce a series of five murals in a community in Manaus. Initiated during a long ferry ride into the heart of the Amazon, the project aims not only to beautify spaces but also to empower local communities by allowing them to tell their own stories through painting. The murals will be developed through workshops with residents, blending artistic practices with local narratives.
(fr) En plus des peintures murales, le projet aboutira à la production d’un film qui capturera l’essence du processus artistique, reflétant les thèmes des peintures murales sous une forme audiovisuelle. Cette initiative a été interrompue dans un premier temps en raison des restrictions imposées par Covid-19, mais elle reste un exemple puissant de production culturelle locale, favorisant le dialogue entre les artistes, les universitaires et les communautés locales.
(en) In addition to the murals, the project will culminate in the production of a film that captures the essence of the artistic process, reflecting the themes of the murals in an audiovisual form. This initiative was initially interrupted due to Covid-19 restrictions, but it remains a powerful example of grassroots cultural production, fostering dialogue between artists, academics, and local communities.
(fr) Après une longue traversée en ferry au cœur de l’Amazonie brésilienne, j’ai décidé d’élaborer une grande vision pour la région en m’associant à un producteur de théâtre paulistano, à un journaliste et activiste environnemental local, à une équipe de production et à un groupe d’artistes pour lancer un processus artistique qui aboutira à la création d’une série cohérente de cinq peintures murales, réalisées conjointement par les artistes et les habitants d’une communauté de Manaus.
(en) Having found myself on a long ferry ride into the heart of the Brazilian Amazon, I decided to construct a grand vision for the area by teaming up with a Paulistano theatre producer, a local environmental journalist and activist, a production crew and a bunch of artists to launch an artistic process that will result in the creation of a cohesive series of five murals, created jointly by the artists and the residents of a community in Manaus.
(fr) Outre l’embellissement de leurs espaces, le projet vise à fournir aux communautés un moyen de raconter leurs propres histoires à travers la peinture, ainsi qu’à faciliter les rencontres avec des journalistes, des écrivains, des poètes, des photographes, des artistes et des universitaires qui réfléchissent à la ville d’aujourd’hui et produisent leurs propres œuvres d’art. À partir de cette « récolte » d’inspiration, les artistes commenceront à organiser des ateliers de peinture avec les habitants des communautés pour développer le thème, les croquis et la peinture des fresques.
(en) In addition to beautifying their spaces, the project aims to provide communities with a means of telling their own stories through painting, as well as facilitating meetings with journalists, writers, poets, photographers, artists and academics who are thinking about the city today and producing their own art. From this « harvest » of inspiration, the artists will begin painting workshops with the residents of communities to develop the theme, sketches and painting of the murals.
(fr) L’ensemble du processus aboutira également à la réalisation d’un film, une œuvre audiovisuelle dont l’expression sera équivalente à celle des peintures murales. Le projet a été suspendu en raison des restrictions imposées par Covid.
(en) The whole process will also result in a film, an audio-visual work that is equivalent in its expressive outcome to the murals. The project was put on hold due to Covid restrictions.
